KDDI announced the Launch of New AR Brand “SATCH” Aimed at Bringing AR into Everyday Life

KDDI_AR_Event

KDDI’s new AR (Augmented Reality) brand “SATCH” makes AR applications more accessible, easier and handier to use.

By elevating AR into a lifestyle tool, SATCH aims to create a world in which AR is a part of everyday life, based on the catchphrase, “The world is more fun than it appears,” in the sense of “catching information” and “checking out information simply by holding up your mobile phone.”

To promote the penetration of SATCH and further popularize AR applications, KDDI will offer SATCH SDK, an AR software development kit for mobile phones using image recognition technology developed by Total Immersion free of charge on a special SATCH page in an effort to open up development of AR applications.

Utilizing D’Fusion®, Total Immersion’s image recognition engine, SATCH SDK can read images directly, without using markers such as 2D barcodes. It also offers excellent image recognition accuracy, tracking and stability.

Using SATCH SDK, companies and application providers can create AR applications for mobile phones in an open development environment, and by registering their AR applications with au one Market, they can develop new corporate promotions and services incorporating AR. Henceforth, customers will be able to enjoy a whole new world every day through AR, obtaining wide-ranging information and images from AR apps, irrespective of genre such as products, stores and sightseeing spots.

Companies and organizations that have already adopted AR applications using SATCH SDK include Ezaki Glico Co., Ltd., Suntory Liquors Limited and Morinaga & Co., Ltd.

In addition, KDDI plans to provide a “SATCH VIEWER” , an AR browser equipped with a portal function for introducing mobile AR applications developed with SATCH SDK and an AR application playback function, creating an environment in which customers can enjoy AR at first hand.

VIDEO - Louis Vuitton Circus Experiences Mobile Augmented Reality Campaign in Japan

Louis_Vuitton_Circus_Augmented_Reality

This holiday season we come across a very innovative collaboration campaign between Louis Vuitton Japan and au (KDDI). “Louis Vuitton Circus” is a seasonal campaign that bridges the world of high fashion, augmented reality, and social interaction.

Available for a limited period only, this AR application is linked to the Louis Vuitton shopwindow concept in the "LOUIS VUITTON CIRCUS in collaboration with au” campaign promoted jointly by KDDI and Louis Vuitton.

The journey into magic begins at Louis Vuitton’s window display which invites everyone into the world of fantasy and illusion. Decorative animals and flying acrobats are coloring shop windows around Tokyo these days. Though they may seem so, these are not your average window displays. Rather they hold secrets in them to be unveiled connecting the virtual world with a real shopping experience.

Shoppers are invited to use the phone’s camera to detect the encoded secret while using the campaign homepage on your PC, which is the first contact point. Then you head to a store window (with friends it seems) to interact with the window display sticker which gives another hint to the secret. The last step is physically entering the shop and receiving limited edition of AR cards which unveil the full secret using the application on Android.

KDDI and Total Immersion seal their strategic alliance with the launch of SATCH, a SDK for mobile AR

Satch Logo

KDDI, Japan’s second biggest telecommunications firm, launches SATCH, a Software Development Kit using Total Immersion’s leading technology for mobile Augmented Reality (AR) applications.

After the acquisition of equity stake in Total Immersion in July 2011, KDDI is now launching SATCH SDK as the realization of this strategic partnership. In addition, KDDI is pleased to announce the release of several mobile applications using SATCH developed with major Japanese companies.

SATCH SDK will be available for free as of December 15, 2011 for 3,000 content providers feeding KDDI’s mobile application marketplace, called “au one Market”. SATCH SDK will allow them to develop state of the art mobile AR apps from a single authoring environment. SATCH utilizes the most advanced Computer Vision features available to date, provided by Total Immersion’s AR software suite D’Fusion®:

- Instant image recognition

- Rendering capability

Total Immersion was the first company to provide markerless tracking solutions, opening the path to the most natural human-machine interactions. D’Fusion® for SATCH benefits from 11 years of experience in developing best-in-class AR solutions, and countless innovations setting the trend in the AR ecosystem.

“At Total Immersion we firmly believe that AR is meant to be part of our everyday life. For this to happen we need to see more and more AR applications flourish, especially on mobile platforms. This is why we made our software suite D’Fusion® available for free two months ago,” said Bruno Uzzan, Co-Founder and CEO, Total Immersion.

“The second step is offering customized SDKs to specific developer communities, such as “au” in Japan. We could not dream of a better opportunity than partnering with KDDI. We can’t wait to see the legendary Japanese creativity expressed through AR thanks to SATCH SDK.”
